Sarah Casey is joining the Art and Archaeology symposium, Digging the Bigger Picture, as a keynote speaker 31 July - 1st August at Cookham Abbey.
The event includes presentations, talks, and panel discussions, designed to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and promote collaboration around art and archaeology.
It will bring artists and archaeologists together to deepen our understanding of place and history through discussions and hands-on activities that encourage innovative, cross-disciplinary approaches to interpreting the past.
Day One – Thursday 31st July
Experience insightful talks, a tour of the Cookham Abbey dig, panel discussions, and a new exhibition, uniting artists and archaeologists in innovative collaboration.
● Held alongside the University of Reading’s excavation of the early medieval Cookham Abbey site
● Brings together artists and archaeologists to explore collaborative approaches to people, place, and time
● Keynote talks by:
○ Dr Antonia Thomas (University of the Highlands and Islands)
○ Professor Sarah Casey (Lancaster University)
● Panel discussion with artists and archaeologists
● A day to spark ideas, build dialogue, and foster future collaborations
● Guided tour with Professor Gabor Thomas the active Cookham Abbey excavation site, a Royal Anglo-Saxon Monastic Settlement.
● Launch of River & Earth exhibition at Holy Trinity Church, featuring six contemporary artists inspired by the dig
